It's fine, but not perfect for baking.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2017After reading some of the negative reviews, I'm wondering if anyone has ever really tried matcha in a true tea ceremony? It's something you need to really sip and it's not an everyday drink...and it takes TIME to prepare. You're not going to get that quality or quantity for the price of this green tea powder, so let's get that out of the way. Is this true matcha? No, it's probably more along the lines of sencha. It's advertised as "matcha" but unfortunately, branding something as "sencha" doesn't sell to an average customer...not a fan of the lack of transparency there, though, but I knew from the start what I was getting...true matcha in this quantity, as mentioned above, would be PRICEY. Is it drinkable straight? Yes, but it's quite bitter when compared to matcha...for me, that's fine.
Now, I bought this mainly for cooking...to make green tea ice cream with my ice cream machine and to replicate the Starbuck's smoothie as well as other smoothies I've come across (because let's be honest...any smoothie or sweet that says it's made with "matcha" is most likely made with "sencha" because PRICE). I've had PERFECT luck with it. For baking, 100% I recommend it. And if you don't mind a green tea with a bit of a bitter taste, it's fine to drink straight...I might recommend adding a little milk.
I also recommend storing this tightly sealed in the fridge after opening and it will last A LOT longer. For the price, you're getting a LOT of tasty, versatile product that's also fairly healthy. When I bought my bag, it came as shown so no problems here...I read some people got their's in an unmarked black bag...that's sketchy and I'd return that ASAP!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2015The matcha tea is great. Before you purchase this, there are couple of things you'll need to know. First is that traditional Japanese green tea has pretty strong taste and can be bitter to some. If you are used to drinking English style tea, or green tea like the ones from Lipton, which really doesn't taste like traditional Asian green tea, you may not ready for the taste. Second, match, which is power form is going to have stronger taste than the tea bag (sencha) style anyway. Because instead of getting the flavor out of the tea leaves, you are actual drinking the ground leaves. Also, you don't need a lot of powder, which is why, I think, some people do not like the taste. For tea bags, Kirkland Signature Japanese Green Tea is great. Now, regarding the brand, it's actually a well known brand in Taiwan. Don't hesitate if worry that this is not from Japan. Taiwan produces some of the finest tea in the world due to it's geology, weather and culture. You can do some research regarding competition tea in Taiwan and the cultural influences by Japan
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2024Glad that this is available again. It is slightly cheaper than the Japanese version. We can't tell the difference between matcha from Taiwan and that from Japan. We drink it as a tea and use it for baking. Love the stuff.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2013Let me start by saying the seller shipped fast sent free info and a free caramel match a sample which was very kind. Shipping cost was overpriced and it came in a plain black bag not the bag advertised so those are the only two reasons I didn't give it a 5_the quality and quantity is great! The bag is big and the tea is ssstttronnng so literally 1 tsp per cup is all you need. I added 1 tbs and it was too much. It is hard to find match a powder especially 8 oz bags for this price****UPDATE*** I'm changing my rating to 3.5 stars. After doing some research good match should be *bright* green this is dull green and tastes very bitter despite sugar though most strong tea has a bitterness. It is tolerable. I think I'm going to try to find another brand, preferably one that is pre-sweetened
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2013I had matcha in Japan and wanted to try to make it on my own back here in the states. This seemed to be the best quality for the price, based on other reviewers.
It is strong and flavorful; I enjoy adding milk and a sweetener (Splenda or honey) for a milder taste. It definitely dissolves better if whisked or beaten into hot water. Some separation still occurs, so beware at the end of the cup!
Overall I enjoy this matcha, hot or cold. Since you don't need very much for a few cups, it will last a long time for one person.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023I drink a lot of this daily with a teaspoon mixed into a 16 oz mug of hot water. Give it a brisk stir and sit down to drink while relaxing after meals . I don't add milk or sugar to tea or coffee. I don't find it bitter and I wouldn't be able to afford a higher quality with the amount I consume. I've been buying this brand for years and enjoy it more than an bland green tea bag. I'm sure that ingesting the powdered tea leaves likely has health benefits as well...and maybe quantity makes up for what it might lack compared to a higher grade as far as health benefits. Also, I don't have a refined palate. But, I doubt those that drink those dessert drinks do either. I'd suggest to those that find it bitter - experiment and adjust the amount they add until they find the perfect ratio of tea to water.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2015Unless you are a matcha purist, this powder will function for all of your green tea needs. The color is green, not brown, though is noticeably darker green than Japanese matcha, which is usually bright green. I drank it straight with both hot and cold water. It mixes great in hot water, though in cold water, residue will remain at the bottom of the bottle so I would make sure to wash it out if you are reusing the bottle or else it will collect into a sludge. In hot water, it tastes as expected. I did not find it bitter or muddy at all. In cold water, it does taste a bit muddy but I still drank it like that regularly so it does not taste terrible. I never found it bitter in either case, though I am used to drinking green tea straight. Would definitely buy again.
