This excellent cookbook proves that one can enjoy great tasting, satisfying meals without feeling deprived and without adding extra pounds. I found healthy substitutes for many of my favorite recipes including Manhattan clam chowder, Vegetarian Lasagna, Honey Ginger Chicken and Shepherd's pie. This book covers everything from sauces and soups to main dishes and desserts. I highly recommend this healthy eating guide.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2014Of course, with the book being about healthy recipes, I naturally dived straight into the Heavenly Muffins & Cookies chapter! The ones I've tried have been heavenly.
Even though I'm not normallt into vegetarian food, I have to say the Rainbow Veggie Kebabs are scrumptious.
There really is something for everyone in this book, even me and I'm a very fussy eater!
Great to see the nutritional information & metric conversions. It's amazing how many healthy recipe books don't actually tell you how healthy the recipes are!
Well worth a read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2014Donna Caesar seems like a good cook and likes to use healthier meats like turkey and healthier vegetables like red potatoes. So I tried two of the recipes in this book that sounded delicious. I made the Turkey Chili and the Red Potato and Leek Soup. Both turned out great but I ended up adapting them quite a bit. I basically made them a bit more gourmet and very tasty.
Here is what I did differently:
Turkey Chili - Instead of frying the turkey without oil I used two tablespoons of olive oil for more flavor. I only used one onion instead of two because two sounded like too much onion. I drained the red kidney beans and only used two teaspoons of chili powder instead of a whole tablespoon. Then I added one (4 ounce) can mild green chilies, 1 teaspoon garlic salt, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon ground tellicherry peppercorns and 2 bay leaves (remove before serving). Instead of simmering on the stovetop for two hours I put everything in the crockpot for three hours on high and one hour on low. Then I turned the crockpot off and let it cool down a bit. Then I made some homemade buttermilk biscuits to go with it. It was delicious.
Red Potato and Leek Soup - Instead of frying the leeks in only one tablespoon of olive oil I upped it to two for flavor and convenience. I used one medium onion instead of just half a cup as I wanted more onion flavor. Instead of using six cups of water I used three cups of water and three cups of whole milk. Then I added in three teaspoons vegetable base and 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt (I omitted the one teaspoon salt she called for and also omitted the basil). I put in some paprika for color. I also omitted the carrot as I thought it would make the soup too sweet. I also peeled the red potatoes. I pureed the whole soup after cooking for 25 minutes instead of just twenty. The red potatoes took a bit longer to cook. Then I served this soup with French Fried Onions on top. Took it to all new levels. The leeks, onions and celery gave this a great earthy flavor. I'll definitely make this again.
Both recipes are perfect for cold weather. I'll be making these recipes again and again as they are so good. Thank you to the author for giving me a good basis for my own cooking exploration. The basics of the recipes are good and you can adapt them to taste. I'm thinking topping the potato soup with crumbled bacon would also make it lovely.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2013Love the recipes in this book for their simplicity, tastefulness and low, low calories. I especially liked the recipes for dressings and sauces which are usually where all those oil and fat-based calories lie in wait for the unsuspecting. I like how she has personally experimented over the years to come up with the tastiest and most healthful recipes rather than just passing on what she has found from various sources elsewhere.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2014while there are some good recipes that I will try,I disagree with her advice on low fat diets.she recommends nonfat dairy and fat free products that are not healthy. you can eat healthy fats and lose weight.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2013The recipes in this book are geared toward cutting fat and calories using delicious ingredients. I, for one, love the flavor of garlic and "hot" spices and appreciate that this author shares a similar taste. I also want to detoxify my body as much as possible, so knowing how to create healthy versions of the basic sauces I use on a regular basis (such as her Green Herb Vinaigrette, Tomato Sauce, and Mayonnaise) not only helps me to lose weight, but also gives me a little more control over what chemicals I put into my body.

I love this approach to losing weight and recommend it to all who love to eat as much as they love to lose.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2014There are some very tasty recipes in this book and it is overall a healthy cook book. The tendency towards the use of processed items like flour though makes the title very misleading. Whole foods are unprocessed foods while flours and whole wheat pastas are definitely NOT whole foods. If you are looking for a strictly whole foods book then look else where...

5.0 out of 5 stars Whole Food Recipes
Loved this book excellent layout, very clear instructions and ideas of what to serve with the end product. Brilliant to have a picture for each recipe to show how it will look like . The recipes should be a lot healthier than many I have looked at recently & hopefully be very tasty, think I've ear marked soooooo many of them to try, just which one to choose first!!! Many thanks to Donna.
