Food Grown Right, In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide to Growing Crops at Home Paperback – Illustrated, March 15, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Food Grown Right, in Your Backyard is a primer for these questions and more. In response to the rising interest in homegrown foods, the Seattle Urban Farm Co. builds vegetable gardens for everyone from busy families to restaurants. Along the way, Colin and Brad teach beginner growers from all walks of life the techniques of organic food production. In this full color, beautifully photographed guide, they prove that anyone can develop a "green thumb," as they show readers how to build a garden from the ground up, explain general garden basics, discuss the best types of crops to try, and much more, including:
* Garden size and design for any setting (no matter how small!), including container gardens
* Soil types, and watering and irrigation
* Plant life 101, and profiles of recommended vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and berries
* Garden tools and time-saving rules
* Crop planning, tips on what to do with the harvest, and a garden calendar to keep your garden growing year-round
Q&A material, profiles of other beginner gardeners, and step-by-step instructions all come together in this unique, friendly guide that was inspired by the kinds of questions Colin and Brad hear every day on the job with the Seattle Urban Farm Co.
"The book is clear, concise, and beautifully illustrated. Even the more technical sections are presented in 'layman’s terms,' so even if you are new to gardening you will understand them. The photographs make understanding the text easy. Additional tables throughout the text also help, including one giving materials for composting. Because of the way the information is laid out, it won’t matter where you live, you will still be able to use the information. If you wish to plant a vegetable garden, this is easily one of the most useful books I’ve seen."

"We love to grow food. We think that once you learn how, you’ll love it too." -- Colin McCrate & Brad Holm, authors

From The Introduction
Every new gardener has a different reason for getting started. Some want a more nutritious diet. Others want to save money on grocery bills. Some are serious cooks who have discovered that fresher food tastes better, while others are suspicious of a food system that recalls large quantities of vegetables every year because of contamination. Many parents start gardening because they want their children to understand where food comes from. We also know people who see gardening as a way to build community and meet their neighbors, or who want to spend more time outdoors, or who just think gardening is fun.
Regardless of their original intention, we find that, as people become more involved in growing food, they start to embrace all of those ideas. Seeing that transformation is one of the things we really love about our job. We hope you too will experience all the benefits of gardening, and that you’ll find the simple, intangible joy that can only be experienced when you “grow your own.”

About the Author
COLIN McCRATE has been growing food organically for more than a decade. He worked on a variety of small farms in the Mid-West before taking a position as Garden Manager at an Environmental Education center on Orcas Island, WA. After leaving Orcas, Colin stayed in the Pacific Northwest, working simultaneously for Farmhouse Organics in Poulsbo, WA and as a residential landscaper in Seattle. After spending a few seasons designing and installing gardens in the city, he officially founded the Seattle Urban Farm Company in January of 2007. It all started with a simple question: "Does anyone need help setting up a vegetable garden?" and it turned out, quite a few did. Learn more at seattleurbanfarmcompany.com
BRAD HALM'S interest in food production started in a small vegetable garden at the Homestead, an experiential living option at Denison University in Ohio. After graduating, he apprenticed on organic farms around Ohio for several years, then took a position as the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Manager for Village Acres Farm in Pennsylvania. He moved to Seattle in 2007 to help Colin start the Seattle Urban Farm Company, and he has been building urban farms ever since. Learn more at seattleurbanfarmcompany.com
HILARY DAHL, a Seattle native, has been with the Seattle Urban Farm Company since the winter of 2010. She brings with her an educational background in landscape architecture and urban planning from the University of Washington. During college Hilary spent three summers interning on a sustainable, net-zero energy housing construction project on Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands where she learned traditional and alternative construction skills as well as organic gardening methods. About the authors
Brad got his start growing food in college in a small vegetable garden at The Homestead, an experiential living center at Denison University. His interest piqued, he went on to apprentice on organic farms at Stratford and Crown Point Ecology Centers in Ohio. A few seasons of farming brought him to the realization that growing food would be his life's vocation. After serving as the CSA manager at Village Acres Farm in Pennsylvania for several years, he moved to Seattle to co-found the Seattle Urban Farm Company, a business that designs, installs, and maintains edible gardens for residential and commercial customers. He's been helping people build and care for their urban farms ever since. On weekends, Brad keeps busy by teaching classes on organic gardening and urban chicken care, and learning Jethro Tull songs on the guitar.
Inspired by the writings of small-scale organic farmers; such as Wendell Berry, Eliot Coleman, David Kline and Gene Logsdon; Colin has been growing food since the late 1990’s. He developed his unique set of backyard farming skills by working on organic production farms, teaching garden-based environmental education and managing residential landscapes. In addition to the numerous, quantifiable benefits of local food production (better tasting food, reduced carbon emissions, community building), he believes that growing food is a worthy endeavor simply because it makes people happier. When he is not farming, Colin is usually talking about farming and/or drinking beer.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2013I have always wanted to plant a veggie garden, but haven't had the space until recently. I'm putting in a raised bed garden this year and was looking for a book that would simplify "garden knowledge" and give me lots of visual ideas. I also wanted a book that was somewhat relevant to the Pacific Northwest and covered Organic gardening. I have nearly zero garden knowledge by the way.
I looked through a few garden books before selecting this one. This had the most visuals of books I looked through.
After reading it I was impressed by the simplicity and ease of reading. I usually only had time for one chapter each time I opened the book, which took about 10-20 minutes each. I love the color photographs in each chapter. They were really helpful in illustrating the topics. The book covers the basics, planning, selecting and preparing a location, building planting boxes from scratch or raised beds, container (i.e. pots) gardening, planting and managing your crops through all season/problems, and selecting what crops to grow. It's clear these guys write from personal experiences. Although the authors are from the Pacific Northwest I think the book would apply to most any climate and they seem to write the book in a way that doesn't alienate any climate.
The entire book was dedicated to the concept of Organic gardening so there was nothing that covered the use of chemicals or other unnatural products.
Armed with the ideas and knowledge from the book I felt confident in my ability to get started. I don't always get that feeling with "do-it-yourself" books, but this one did a great job. I quickly and easily selected a sunny location in my yard that would fit one of the recommended raised bed sizes. I made a crude drawing of what I wanted, acquired second-hand a few of the recommended garden tools, hit the hardware store and I am off and running.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020This book covers it all. When we started to plan our garden, we got this book first. I am so glad we did! I read several other gardening books, and while they were all helpful, none of the other books came close to this one in terms of breadth and depth of useful material. It covers deciding where to put it, how big to make it, and what shape it should take. It covers what to do about irrigation, soil, fertilizer (hint: go organic), and more. It covers what kinds of seeds to get, how to plan what to plant when, and how/why to do crop rotation. It goes into the main crops you might grow, what to watch for, and what you can learn from each crop.
The authors run a Seattle home gardening business and I live in Utah. It is a completely different climate, and I feel like they did a good job making it generic enough to work for any location.
I am on my third garden season and I am still learning, but there are things you can only do when you are planning your garden (like out it in the sunshine), and I am so glad I had this book to help with the planning.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2012I was very impressed by the quality of this book. Brad and Colin clearly have a great deal experience and knowledge about growing food, especially in the northwestern United States, and it looks like they've tried to share it all! The book caters to a wide range of experience; It is a suitable introduction for beginners, but the reference sections probably have information that would be new to most seasoned gardeners.
Stylistically, the book keeps things fresh by moving between between different ways of addressing the reader as the material dictates. Sometimes, the book is textbook. Other times, it is a series of anecdotes. Still other times, it is a Socratic dialog. For me, this made the book a lot easier to read and kept my attention through information that could have been easy to overlook.
The latter half of the book is more of a reference, making its way through dozens of plants and pests, and giving solutions to many common garden problems.
Visually, the book is beautifully laid out and Hilary has done a fantastic job with the photography, which appears on nearly every page.
As an amateur gardener, I'm thrilled with this book. My gardening books from the 80's are nice, but it is great to have a modern urban gardening reference from people who clearly know their stuff!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2013I have 23 acres off the grid, a mix of mountain and pasture land (on the opposite side of the country from Seattle by the way). For the past few years I have gone through a bunch of books and resources looking for a one book that would provide me with enough practical knowledge and insight to be my go to single resource book when I was out there where there is no option to just go Google something when I run into a situation where I need more info or for those times my Google fried brain is just too lazy to recall something I should already know... (Off grid in my case also means no cell coverage, no internet, no nothing!).
While this book is built around growing in your back yard and or in smaller spaces, the info is totally applicable to midsize homestead types too. Whether you're an Urbanite or an aspiring country bumpkin who is not blessed with the DNA of multiple generations of country bumkiness wisdom, the best part about the book is how accessible it is. You won't be overwhelmed by random information or rants of weird authors.... what you need you will find neatly formatted and laid out in this book. The pictures and additional resource recommendations are also a great help.
Finally (and just in time for spring) I found this awesome book. It is so good; I am probably going to by the kindle version as well, so I can refer to it when in the city and leave the actual book out on the land.
This book should be in your collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2017Great book for beginners such as myself. I have been absolutely horrible with plants in the past so this book has taught me a lot and Im excited to try my hand at my first garden.
