Guest Review of The Pollan Family Table by Michael J. Fox

In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that the authors of The Pollan Family Table are my wife, Tracy Pollan; her sisters Lori and Dana; and my mother-in-law, Corky. My brother-in-law, Michael Pollan, the Carl Sagan of food, wrote the foreword. Spoiler alert: my review is a rave.
How could it not be? Notwithstanding the fact that I’d like to keep my place at that eponymous table—one that I’ve had the privilege to hold for some twenty-five years—I can honestly and enthusiastically report that this collection of recipes, reflections, and gorgeous color photographs is a thoughtfully conceived, beautifully realized, invaluable asset to any family making dinner plans. Moreover, it’s a paean to those moments, however brief or infrequent they may be, when we gather the people we love and share a meal.
So much can get in the way of preparing and convening for a regular family dinner. But this book offers solutions to those problems with simple recipes that cater to any taste or occasion, running the gamut from soup (Creamless Broccoli Soup with Whole Roasted Garlic and Frizzled Leeks) to nuts (Key Lime Pie with Walnut Oatmeal Crust).
And there is something in this book you will love, no matter your appetite or dietary restrictions. Even non-vegetarians will rejoice at what I believe to be the most perfect veggie burger on the planet, the Supreme Crispy Quinoa Vegetable Burger. Seafood lovers are well served here, too, with favorite recipes like Smoky Sautéed Shrimp. And just looking at the Citrus-Roasted Chicken with Grand Marnier triggers a Proustian flashback, bringing to mind not only the aroma and juicy, subtle flavor but also a cascade of memories, conversations, plans hatched, jokes and stories told and retold at family get-togethers. The familiar food and setting provide a continuum. Proust describes it as “Time regained.” Marty McFly might exclaim, “You built a time machine . . . out of a beef tenderloin?”
Every family’s story develops around its own table. You share the moments, both seminal and trivial, that over time become your life. For us, it’s a banquette in the breakfast nook of our New York apartment. In the chaotic process of raising four children, we have put in so much time around our own table—not only with meals but also with homework and art projects and games of Clue—that Tracy and I have had to reupholster the bench seats at least half a dozen times.
But the definitive PFT is the trestle table in the dining room of Corky and Stephen’s Connecticut home. As the family multiplied, there became less and less space for new spouses and their offspring and weekend guests, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. Corky says that she and Stephen “were determined the family tradition would continue, with everyone able to sit together, rather than relegating the youngest to ‘the kids’ table.’ So ours became the ever-lengthening table.” When the table grew too large for the room, Corky and Stephen extended the house, knocking out a wall in the dining room to provide extra space for another half-dozen happy cousins.
So, yes, this is a book of delicious recipes, complete with pantry and market lists and tips on essential utensils and homespun advice; but what makes it compelling on the human level is its insistence that the family meal is not a thing of the past. The Pollan Family Table reassures that best intentions can be put into action and the results can enrich your family’s life in ways that are both harmonious and healthy. Corky, Lori, Tracy, and Dana share what they know so you can share with those you love. As I said, full disclosure: you knew it was going to be a rave because, after all . . . this is what my life tastes like.
Review
“The Pollans have hit the ball out of the park with their first book, celebrating deliciously simple and poetically tasty food for my family (and everyone else's) to love every day. The shopping lists are easy and concise, the recipes simple and straightforward, and the photographs drive me insane with the urge to sprint first to the market and then to the kitchen and to start cooking right NOW. I simply cannot wait to cook from this book.” -- Mario Batali
“This wonderful book shows how good food, simply and seasonally prepared, has the power to bring the family back to the table—and keep them there! Fast food culture has disconnected us from something so basic to human nature, but when we encounter real and tasty food again, it’s like coming home." -- Alice Waters
"Tracy’s family set a place for me at the Pollan Family Table, over 25 years ago now. This gorgeous book brings to mind so many holiday meals and other family gatherings as well as countless smaller moments when we could have just had a meal on the fly but instead made time to sit together and share. This is what my life tastes like. Enjoy." -- Michael J. Fox

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2015I don't know why there are so few reviews for this cookbook. It's gorgeous and smart and user-friendly. It ticks off all the boxes for me: beautiful pictures, nicely organized (thank you for the shopping lists!), recipes that are easy to follow. I love the premise, too. I was never a great or creative cook, but cook I did, and when my kids were growing up, we always ate dinner together, at the table. I think that's really important...and sadly missing for many families in this digital, 24/7 plugged in age.
The recipes I've tried so far have been unbelievably delicious (Hunter's Stew, Roast Chicken with Roasted Vegetables, Spaghetti Aglio e Olio, and my current favorite, the recipes for marinara sauce and mini turkey meatballs). I like that the recipes use so many basic, familiar, items, and yet the dishes themselves are not basic, they're divine.
This is a cookbook to put beside your old standby Better Homes and Garden and Good Housekeeping cookbooks. Yes, it's beautifully illustrated/put together and the family comments/stories are great, but it's not just another coffee table cookbook. This is a cookbook that you'll find yourself using again and again. The variety of dishes is perfect, the recipes are clear, and most, if not all, aren't terribly time consuming or complicated.
It's simply one of the best cookbooks out there. Period. Trust me. I have a collection that I've bought over the years because "maybe, someday"...and they always end up collecting dust.
Now that my kids are grown and on their own, I've been sort of "on strike" when it comes to cooking homemade meals for my husband and I. We eat out a lot. So when I tell you that I've already cooked five recipes since I got it January 29 (every one a winner!) understand that this is a huge stamp of approval. The Pollan Family Cookbook helped me find my kitchen again...and I'm so glad it did!
(Why are you still reading this review? Go buy the book!)
PS...The marinara sauce rivals what I've had at old, family-owned Italian restaurants. I kid you not.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2014I have scores and scores of cookbooks on my shelves. As a food blogger, I'm always looking for that next best dish to try. Yet, I've found that many cookbooks don't sustain my interest. I might try one or two recipes from the book and then move on. When I received my copy of The Pollan Family Table, I was immediately drawn into the book.
The pictures are stunning and the layout is very easy to read. There are no hidden curve balls here my friends. I found myself thumbing through the ENTIRE cookbook in one sitting. By the end, I literally had post its on almost every page. This recipe book is not intimidating AT ALL. Every recipe is very doable for even the most novice cooks. I love that none of the sisters nor their mom are "professional chefs"--- that definitely took some of the initial intimidation away.
The book has a nice breadth of recipes that can appeal to all different types of eaters. I love that along the side of each recipe, there's a quick cheat sheet for the ingredients you need to purchase from the market and those that should come straight from your pantry. And, Essential Utensils, Culinary ABC's and Sage Advice sections arm you with all the confidence you'll need to dive into any of the recipes.
In just two weeks I've already made and mastered The Pollan Signature Salad, The Spanish Tortilla with Manchego , Paprika-Seared Shrimp, Brussels Sprouts with Pine Nuts and Dried Cranberries, Easy Chicken Parm with Fresh Moz. Oh, and did I say that my two kids (12 1/2 and 9 1/2) have eaten and LOVED each dish. They eat the Crispy Parmesan-Zucchini chips like they're potato chips--- they can't get enough. This is a beautifully organized, very manageable cookbook for anyone to use-- it's actually the perfect holiday gift - I've already ordered 4 extra copies to gift to friends and family.
You'll also love all the anecdotes that accompany the recipes....very inspiring for all ages....makes you appreciate the importance of family mealtime and the benefits that come from eating at a communal table. Well-done!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2014This is a very comprehensive cookbook. It is loaded with recipes split into sections for poultry, meat, fish/seafood, vegetarian/meatless Mondays, pasta, soups/chili's, salads, veg/sides, dressings/condiments and desserts. It also has sections on ingredients and essential kitchen utensils as well as culinary definitions and advice from the authors.
The things I like about it are that the recipes are very good. They use real food ingredients and have a very chef-like feel to them. Also, they include a "from the market" and a "from the pantry" side box for every recipe which really makes it easy to shop for the ingredients. Another great feature in the kindle version is that at the beginning of each section is a list of the recipes for that section. If you just touch a recipe it sends you directly to it rather than having to flip through the whole book. Since it is such a huge cookbook, this feature is so handy! Also, each recipe is tied to a family member in some way, usually with a story. There are pictures of the whole family throughout the book too.
There was just one negative, which may not be a negative depending on the reader. IMO, the recipes are moderate to advanced. That is fine, but it makes it hard for me to have it as a go-to cookbook on busy weeknights. So far, I've been saving this for weekends so I haven't been able to try as many of the recipes as I wanted to yet. With some practice, I'm sure I will be able to do them better and faster, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Overall, I really like this cookbook and recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An everyday cooking companion
Great recipe book for everyday cooking. No strange ingradients, no complicated recipes. Everything is very well explained, starting from the shopping list, the needed ingredients, time needed and detailed instructions. Very nice pictures of many of the recipes too. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous family cookbook with a dash of memoirs.
Beautiful cookbook with real food recipes that will appeal to experienced cooks but with detailed instructions, it's also perfect for the novice cook.
I enjoyed reading about the Pollan Family meals and how despite leading busy lives, they sat down together (at the family table) most evenings. An act that's been cultivated across their entire family for generations.
This hardcover cookbook is nicely laid out with bright beautiful food photographs of almost every recipe and lots of pictures of the Pollan family members. It has easy delectable real food recipes, pantry and utensil suggestions and cooking terms explained in everyday language. This cookbook is also full of valuable cooking tips. Most helpful to me... the "Pasta Rules" **hangs head in shame...turns out I was doing it all wrong**
First recipe on my must-make list, is Citrus-Roasted Chicken with Grand Marnier (page 29), that I plan to serve with plain roasted potatoes, as well as Brussels Sprouts with Pine Nuts and Dried Cranberries (page 245). Yum, I can hardly wait to sit down with The Hubs for that dinner!
The Pollan Family Table is not a fad cookbook. I do believe it has staying power. Much like my dog-eared 35-year-old copy of Betty Crocker's Cookbook, I predict that the recipes (and valuable cooking tips) in The Pollan Family Table will still be relevant years from now. This cookbook is one that will be handed down and used for generations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buen libro

3.0 out of 5 stars Pollan
