The eighty recipes in Cooking for Baby make preparing delicious meals for babies and toddlers a breeze, even for busy parents. The recipes are organized by age, showing how to introduce cereal grains and simple vegetable and fruit purees to your infant at six months, how to move on to chunkier foods by eight or nine months, and how to graduate to real meals for young toddlers of twelve to eighteen months to enjoy along with the entire family. When you see how easy it is, with a few smart tips on preparation and storage, you’ll never go back to the jars.
With Cooking for Baby, your youngster will enjoy a wide variety of fresh and interesting foods for a very happy and healthy beginning.

About the author

I am a cookbook author, and recipe consultant, as well as the founder of Petit Appetit, a culinary education service. Through private in-home cooking classes, recipe creation and testing, and workshops and lectures throughout Northern California, I empower parents, families, schools and businesses to provide fresh, healthy, organic foods to their families, students, communities and clients. I am proud to be the author of award winning cookbooks, The Petit Appetit Cookbook and Petit Appetit Eat, Drink and Be Merry, as I am able to reach many parents beyond my classes and encourage them to make and enjoy healthy meals with their families. I authored the recipes to Cooking for Baby by Williams-Sonoma, and also contribute writings, recipes and blogs to various online parenting websites.
As my clients' children (and my own) are getting older I've now created a unique interactive title for kids to create, cook, share, dare, eat and play with food. Cook This Book! is a guidebook, a cookbook, a journal and a license for kids to have fun and get creative with food. It's illustrated by my co-chefs and children, Jonas and Ellery.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2011I am a new mom and this book is a perfect first step to making your own baby food. The recipes are simple to understand. I especially like that the book is divided into age groups so that you can use it until your child is a toddler. There are purees for 6 months and more complex food for the toddlers. I grow much of my own food as we live on a farm so this is perfect for me. The book itself is very engaging with beautiful pictures of the finished product. There are also hints on freezing and storing.
To those who say that this book pushes you NOT to feed your child before 6 months of age, this is not true. The author states in the beginning of the book to "keep in mind that every baby develops differently, and that you and your pediatrician are the best judges of what foods your baby should be eating, and when."
There are studies that show that feeding solids before six months increases your child's risk of obesity and allergies as well as diabetes (just check out the Sears Baby Book, or ask your pediatrician). It is best to wait until 6 months of age, but many start their babies on solids at 4 months. My opinion in talking to other moms and pediatricians is that if at all possible, wait. As long as your baby is gaining well and seems satisfied with breastmilk or formula, why rush them into solids? Of course, for the baby who is not gaining well and seems ravenous at 4 months, they may need to start solids earlier. It is a question of when YOUR baby is ready.
This book is for people who want to make their own baby food because they want an alternative to the jarred food that may contain chemicals or the expensive organics. I am an avid cook and collect cookbooks. Now that I am a mother, this is going to the top of the pile!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2016I love this cookbook! My priorities in a cookbook were: reasonable recipes, beautiful photos, and accurate health information. This gets five stars for all three categories! I read many reviews before picking this cookbook, and I'm so glad that I did.
I love the recipes, and their variety. There are simple purees, but not one million repetitious puree recipes. There are also "stages" recipes and even some toddler ones, but these don't get into crazy "over-gourment" territory. I like that there is a basic baby stock recipe, and other recipes refer back to it, so that even baby's soup is made with homemade stock. The ingredients and equipment required are very manageable.
The photos are perfect. They are inspirational and abundant. I'm very happy with the visual aspects of this book.
The health information is also an A+. It's not a celebrity cookbook, giving bland information. It helps parents air on the side of caution (emphasizing organic, etc) without going overboard and over-worrying parents.
Overall, I highly recommend this book! I use this and the Baby Bullet cook book to make all my baby's food. I don't need any other cookbooks besides those two!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2013If you read the description, you know what you're getting with this book. It's very pretty, and there are some great recipes, but it's not everything you could possibly want in a baby cookbook. My daughter is just starting solids, so we're still on the single fruit/veggie stage right now, but I imagine that I'll get a lot more use out of this book down the road. I like that it has some combinations that I wouldn't have considered. The pictures are gorgeous, too.
That being said, it's limited in the number of recipes it can offer (those pretty pictures take up a lot of space, after all). It's definitely a nice tool to have, but if you're looking for a one stop shop approach to baby cookbooks, this isn't it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2010This book contains great guidelines for how to prepare first foods for your baby. I say "guidelines" because I followed my pediatrician's recommendations on what to introduce when instead of the book's. I used the ages as guidelines as well, as we started our guy on solids at 3 mos, so I just moved along accordingly. What I appreciated most were the tips for getting the most nutritionally out of the foods (ie baking sweet potatoes in the skin instead of peeling them first, same with apples & pears) and information on what nutritional value each food provides a rapidly growing babe. Also useful information on how long each type of food keeps, both in the fridge & freezer. As Jr. gets older, there are also recipes for when you start eating together as a family that are suitable with regards to salt, sugar, fat, etc. for the little one and also yummy (with a little seasoning added...) for mom & dad. As an avid home-chef, this book really provided me with some guidance for how to translate our family's love of cooking & food into something our son can participate in as well. (Added bonus - the photos are beautifully styled, secretly what drew me to the book in the first place!)

4.0 out of 5 stars
