Plant Based Nutrition for Endurance Athletes: The New Science of Exploiting Organic and Raw Foods (The Science of Nutrition Book 1)

Plant Based Nutrition for Endurance Athletes: The New Science of Exploiting Organic and Raw Foods (The Science of Nutrition Book 1)

The Science Behind Why a Proper Plant Based Diet Can Provide More Energy for Endurance Athletes It is a widely accepted principle, even among those who embrace the standard Western style diet, that eating unprocessed, organic foods is in general healthier than eating a highly processed meat based diet. What is not generally known is the specific impact that eating a diet consisting primarily of organic, plant based foods can have on the performance of the endurance athlete. Athletic performance is largely dependent on how well the body is able to manage, store and process energy. Eating a diet of unprocessed, organic food enables the human body to produce an excess of energy while at the same time negating the potential for any harmful ingredients. That clean energy increases endurance levels, overall stamina and optimal fitness of the human body. Conversely, eating a processed meat based diet demands a greater energy cost based on the metabolic processes involved and in turn yields a much smaller nutritional payload. Plant Based Nutrition for Endurance Athletes: The New Science of Exploiting Organic and Raw FoodsThis book will lay out the science based arguments for why eating a clean, plant based diet is optimal: Overview of the Basic Metabolism Process Why Animal Protein and Processed Food is Bad for Athletes Naturally Enhancing the Metabolization of Carbohydrates The Benefits of Fibers, Chlorophyll and AlkaloidsGetting the Maximum Nutritional Benefit from Green, Leafy VegetablesOptimal Ratio and Distribution of Nutrients for Maximum Energy Output Start Eating Clean Today for Better Performance and Lower Risk of Injury! Cure Your Child with Food: The Hidden Connection Between Nutrition and Childhood Ailments

Cure Your Child with Food: The Hidden Connection Between Nutrition and Childhood Ailments

Why treat your child with drugs when you can cure your child with nutrition? Grounded in cutting-edge science and filled with case studies that read like medical thrillers, this is a book for every parent whose child suffers from mood swings, stomachaches, ear infections, eczema, anxiety, tantrums, ADD/ADHD, picky eating, asthma, lack of growth, and a host of other physical, behavioral, and developmental problems.Previously published as What’s Eating Your Child? and now with a new chapter on the unexpected connection between gluten and insatiable appetite, Cure Your Child with Food shows parents how to uncover the clues behind their children’s surprisingly nutrition-based health issues and implement simple treatments—immediately. You’ll discover how zinc deficiency can cause picky eating and affect growth. The panoply of problems caused by gluten and dairy. How ear infections and mood disorders, such as anxiety and bipolar disorder, can be a sign of food intolerance. Plus, how to get your child to sleep, soothe hyperactivity, and deal with reflux using simple nutritional strategies.Ms. Dorfman, a nutritionist whose typical family arrives at her practice after seeing three or more specialists, gives parents the tools they need to become nutrition detectives; to recalibrate their children’s diets through the easy E.A.T. program; and, finally, to get their children off drugs—antibiotics, laxatives, Prozac, Ritalin—and back to a natural state of well-being. Healing With Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition (3rd Edition)

Healing With Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition (3rd Edition)

Used as a reference by students of acupuncture, this is a hefty, truly comprehensive guide to the theory and healing power of Chinese medicine. It's also a primer on nutrition—including facts about green foods, such as spirulina and blue-green algae, and the "regeneration diets" used by cancer patients and arthritics—along with an inspiring cookbook with more than 300 mostly vegetarian, nutrient-packed recipes. The information on Chinese medicine is useful for helping to diagnose health imbalances, especially nascent illnesses. It's smartly paired with the whole-foods program because the Chinese have attributed various health-balancing properties to foods, so you can tailor your diet to help alleviate symptoms of illness. For example, Chinese medicine dictates that someone with low energy and a pale complexion (a yin deficiency) would benefit from avoiding bitter foods and increasing "sweet" foods such as soy, black sesame seeds, parsnips, rice, and oats. (Note that the Chinese definition of sweet foods is much different from the American one!)Pitchford says in his dedication that he hopes the reader finds "healing, awareness, and peace" from following his program. The diet is certainly acetic by American standards (no alcohol, caffeine, white flour, fried foods, or sugar, and a minimum of eggs and dairy) but the reasons he gives for avoiding these "negative energy" foods are compelling. From the adrenal damage imparted by coffee to immune dysfunction brought on by excess refined sugar, Pitchford spurs you to rethink every dietary choice and its ultimate influence on your health. Without being alarmist, he adds dietary tips for protecting yourself against the dangers of modern life, including neutralizing damage from water fluoridation (thyroid and immune-system problems may result; fluoride is a carcinogen). There's further reading on food combining, female health, heart disease, pregnancy, fasting, and weight loss. Overall, this is a wonderful book for anyone who's serious about strengthening his or her body from the inside out. Read More »

Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods

Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods

Bread. Cheese. Wine. Beer. Coffee. Chocolate. Most people consume fermented foods and drinks every day. For thousands of years, humans have enjoyed the distinctive flavors and nutrition resulting from the transformative power of microscopic bacteria and fungi. Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods is the first cookbook to widely explore the culinary magic of fermentation. "Fermentation has been an important journey of discovery for me," writes author Sandor Ellix Katz. "I invite you to join me along this effervescent path, well trodden for thousands of years yet largely forgotten in our time and place, bypassed by the superhighway of industrial food production." The flavors of fermentation are compelling and complex, quite literally alive. This book takes readers on a whirlwind trip through the wide world of fermentation, providing readers with basic and delicious recipes-some familiar, others exotic-that are easy to make at home. The book covers vegetable ferments such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and sour pickles; bean ferments including miso, tempeh, dosas, and idli; dairy ferments including yogurt, kefir, and basic cheesemaking (as well as vegan alternatives); sourdough bread-making; other grain fermentations from Cherokee, African, Japanese, and Russian traditions; extremely simple wine- and beer-making (as well as cider-, mead-, and champagne-making) techniques; and vinegar-making. With nearly 100 recipes, this is the most comprehensive and wide-ranging fermentation cookbook ever published. Read More »
