Always Tastes Delish
My second time ordering Chicory from Frontier. Really delicious every time. Don't measure chicory like coffee, measure it like tea and be precise every time. I use a level tablespoon to 2 1/2 cups of water. Best taste for me is letting it brew 10 minutes in the Sakura French press and first boil that water in my electric kettle. It's just perfect. I had to give up all coffee, caff and decaf, reg or organic. Coffee will give you a gluten response. Some people said they felt the package was light, but if you look at the pics attached, you definitely get a pound even after I tared the weight of the containers and used a tablespoon, I still came out over a pound. Chicory, I think, is going to get big.

I like this product alone as a coffee substitute, but I LOVE it mixed with roasted dandelion root. I have a friend who uses 1 tsp. of each to make his "chicory/dandelion coffee". But I find the chicory so dense and strong that I've reduced it to 1/2 tsp. per whole tsp. of roasted dandelion root - for about 10 oz. water. I'm a big enthusiast of dandelion root for it's liver- and kidney-cleansing effects, and of chicory root for it's high inulin content - good for the gut! Oh, and this roasted chicory root made it easy for me to quit drinking coffee a year ago because it gives a robustness to my cup that dandelion root alone is missing. I lived in Italy for many years and was accustomed to espresso strength and density!

At times I've run out of dandelion root, and made my "coffee" with 1 full tsp. chicory root per 10 oz. water. One could even imitate espresso by using chicory only and reducing the amount of water.

A little of this goes a long way! Really enriches a cup of something hot. And the quality of this organic produce seems excellent.

As much as I like this root, and enjoy it as a staple in my diet, I'm a little concerned because it seems to be staining my teeth. It certainly has stained the stainless steel saucepan in which I simmer it. Trying natural tooth whitening methods like oil pulling, brushing with a baking soda brine, sometimes rinsing with a few drops of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide in a few ounces of water. Not sure whether it's the chicory staining my enamel, or rather that my enamel has become translucent. So I'm doing a remineralizing protocol too, for general tooth health..

    Love chicory in my coffee!!
  • Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2016
Seems that several of the more negative reviews are about the fact that chicory root doesn't taste like coffee. That's because it's not coffee. If you can think about it as a tasty hot morning beverage that you might drink instead of coffee, that helps. But I do understand the complaint--for me it's not just about the fact it doesn't taste like coffee, but also there's no caffeine boost.

That said, this organic roasted chicory root is very good--delicious, even, and very nutritious when mixed half-and-half with roasted dandelion root, also from Frontier Natural. I put 1 tsp of each into my fabulous Finum tea/coffee basket in a 16-oz mug, pour boiled water over, cover, and let steep a few minutes. Remove the basket and I have a dark-chocolate-colored brew with a rich flavor: slightly sweet, a little earthy, with a faint bitter undertone. For added nutrient boost, I stir in 1 Tbsp Vital Proteins collagen peptides, a tsp or so of virgin coconut oil, and a shot of homemade coconut/tiger nut milk. Can also add a little ground cinnamon, vanilla powder, whatever.

    Yummy!

This is not a great substitute for coffee, but it is the best I have found. It is much better than tea, which has too weak of flavor and thickness compared to coffee. I first tried the directions on the bag, just pouring boiling water over 1tsp chicory grounds, and it was way too weak, more like tea. I upped the grounds to 1 Tbsp, and it helped thicken it and add more flavor, but it was still too weak. I couldn't fit more than one Tbsp in my tea ball, so I decided to try my stovetop espresso pot. Using a little over one tsp in there, it makes a good, strong cup of "coffee." The flavor is almost kind of mocha like, but not really coffee mocha, something different. Like I said, it's an ok substitute for coffee, but I'm counting the days till I can have the real stuff again!
Be prepared to experiment before you find the right way to make it for yourself.

I'm coffee obsessed and when I was having adrenal issues, my doctor recommended skipping the caffeine (which I had kinda known and already started). Though I expected horrible caffeine withdrawals, it wasn't all that bad. I realized I didn't really *need* coffee like I had previously thought, but I really liked it. I tried drinking tea in the morning (even rich flavored ones) but it just didn't cut it. I wanted that full bodied, warm drink in the morning, something with a little substance to hold me over until I was ready to eat. The same doc actually on telling me a story said about the same thing, and recommend this to me. I ordered it and tried right away, and it actually fits the bill! I don't even notice the difference when it's hot (I told people, if you make coffee and this up the same way (I add creamer and milk) and handed them both to me and said they were just two different types of coffee, I would believe it!) now when it cools some, which usually I still like drinking coffee then, it does taste less like coffee, but it's still very good.

My mom had ordered another brand (Dandy Blend) that was chicory and dandelion root (I wanted to try the straight chicory before branching out) and we traded some of each. That one was also very good but less coffee-like, but still had a rich, nice flavor. That one is interesting and different because it was more of a powder and I made it in my coffee maker and it all dissolved. This one is more like coffee when you put it in the coffee maker, it's more like a grind and leaves the grounds behind.

For anyone looking for that coffee fix without the caffeine, this is a great way to go. Plus all the health benefits, it's just a great choice! Once everything heals up I'll probably still drink this and save coffee for the times I really need that kick of energy!

Fast delivery. However, the drink taste and smell are far away from how have to be. Do not like it, unfortunately.
(looks like fake brand) On the market many companies selling much better quality and much cheaper. Cannot recommend it.
