In Growing Food in a Short Season, Melanie J. Watts explains that with the right gardening practices the short northern summer can lead to an explosion of life, producing enough color and food to see anyone through the dark days of winter. Providing helpful hints and a wise gardening philosophy for a productive food garden, Watts begins at ground level with instruction on how to use compost and manure to create fertile soil that will lend its life to plants. A variety of seed options and planting methods are presented including start times and placement taking into account microclimates that occur in each garden as well as the benefits of companion planting. Additionally, plants that are easily grown in zones two and three are listed with concise how-to-grow information. Watts provides full chapters on garden maintenance and harvesting, as well as tips on cooking and preserving the bounty with great recipes that focus on eating seasonally.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2016LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I'm in zone 4a so all the great tips are applicable to me. I have found very few gardening books that talk about not only our very cold climate but also our very short growing season. FABULOUS book with TONS of helpful information. I've recommended it to several friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2018We live in one of the shortest growing seasons in the contiguous US. This book is essential!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2017Very informative book for gardeners wanting to make the most of a limited growing season! The book covers most of the basics and includes a great list of plant suggestions, including perennial edibles. The suggested recipes encourage gardeners to make the most of the seasonal bounty. Although the book is written for a Canadian audience, it seems applicable to many colder climates. I garden in zone 5 with a much longer growing season than the author, but I've learned a lot of different ways to extend my season and make up for early season losses with quick-growing crops.

Excellent book. Her methods of gardening seem very intuitive and easy, letting nature do a lot of the work for you. I have always felt overwhelmed by books that deal with soil, so I was apprehensive that 1/3 of the book was about soil. But I found it to be an easy and enjoyable read, full of lots of useful information. I highly recommend it to anyone gardening in zones 2-3, or outside of those zones too!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
Good book. It is more for beginner than anything else. There is good advice in the book but doesn't really go in detail. I didn't learn anything new. I like the last part about each vegetable since the planting time is more in line with my weather here than any other book that I have but again she doesn't go a lot in detail on how to grow each vegetable or how to preserve them. I was hoping for a lot of trick to grow vegetable in the north but there is nothing outstanding in the book. Still this book was easy to read and interesting.
