About the author

I am a cookbook author, and recipe consultant, as well as the founder of Petit Appetit, a culinary education service. Through private in-home cooking classes, recipe creation and testing, and workshops and lectures throughout Northern California, I empower parents, families, schools and businesses to provide fresh, healthy, organic foods to their families, students, communities and clients. I am proud to be the author of award winning cookbooks, The Petit Appetit Cookbook and Petit Appetit Eat, Drink and Be Merry, as I am able to reach many parents beyond my classes and encourage them to make and enjoy healthy meals with their families. I authored the recipes to Cooking for Baby by Williams-Sonoma, and also contribute writings, recipes and blogs to various online parenting websites.
As my clients' children (and my own) are getting older I've now created a unique interactive title for kids to create, cook, share, dare, eat and play with food. Cook This Book! is a guidebook, a cookbook, a journal and a license for kids to have fun and get creative with food. It's illustrated by my co-chefs and children, Jonas and Ellery.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2008I already had Super Baby Food at home for my 2nd child. It's a good book, but I wanted to find some other baby food recipes to make for my 3rd child. I purchased both Blender Baby Food and this book, The Petit Appetit. I enjoy both books, however I am very impressed with the details that this author, Lisa Barnes, goes into. She talks about food safety, nutrition, the benefits of homemade vs. store bought, organic foods, and other good topics. The chapters are divided into the ages/stages when certain foods can be introduced. She also has some great recipes that I can't wait to try.
My son is only 9 weeks old now, so he's not quite ready to begin sampling these great foods, but I figured that summer is the perfect time to catch foods at the farmer's markets while they are in season and at their freshest. I can start making, freezing and perhaps even canning some of the recipes so that they are ready when my son is ready. This book is a great resource to have at home. Don't be afraid to try making your own baby food. With my first child, I remember standing in line at the grocery store lining the conveyor belt with tons of jars of food. I never thought that I could make my own food. Between that time and the birth of my second child, I started down the organic road and realized I could make my own food. "Duh! What did people do years ago before jarred baby food!" I thought to myself. It really is easy to do but it just takes time. If you're willing to take that time, you'll benefit from buying this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2006I borrowed this book from my local library, to test a few of the recipes. I am very impressed! Every recipe that I've tried has turned out absolutely delicious! The book begins with an informative section about the meanings behind the buzz word "organic," and the recipes are neatly organized according to age (in case one needs a guideline). The author has even included little labels that point out which recipes are vegan, vegetarian, and allergy friendly.
As a very picky mom with little patience for recipes that take too long/don't turn out, I highly recommend this book and have purchased my own copy. The recipes are not only delicious, they are easy and pretty foolproof! And nothing can top the feeling I get when watching my little boy hungrily gulp down a meal I prepared just for him....eager for each spoonfull. The recipes aren't just yummy for babies either......I made some of the recipes for my teenage sisters, and they ate every last bite! If you purchase this book, you won't be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2008I really like the recipes in this cookbook and my daughter isn't even old enough to eat solids yet, so it isn't only for the kids. I am really looking forward to preparing home-cooked meals for her when she is bigger and this book clearly lays out a plan of introducing new foods. One slightly annoying part of the book is that the author over-uses the term "organic" when listing ingredients for a recipe. I fortunately live in an area where organic produce is plentiful, but I know others who live in areas where organic-everything is either not always available or cost-prohibitive. A short note in the beginning stating: "Use organically grown produce when available" would have sufficed. It's odd too that she lists "olive oil" and "organic carrots, organic peas, etc..." why not organic olive oil if we're going to repeat the term ten times in one recipe? A funny misprint is that her home-made fish-sticks are labeled with a vegetarian symbol. I wonder where she gets her vegetarian fish? Aside from those minor quirks, the recipes themselves are really yummy!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2011this is a really good cookbook. tells you which dish is gluten free, veggie dish, no cook. Its very simple & simple to follow. I just wished there were pictures to show the foods & was catagorized better. It goes from months old babies to toddler but it would've been better if they were sorted into breakfast dishes, dessert dishes. It kind of just bunches together according to the age of your child. It was an ok buy overall. I just wished there was more to it than i anticipated.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2007I recently purchased this book along with another like it and have found this one to be my favorite! How easy is it to make your own babyfood? Well, if you can make a grilled cheese, you can make your own baby food with, just as the author states, pretty much stuff you probably already have in the kitchen!
The introductory chapters provide a good deal of information on knowing when to start your baby on solids, differentiating the various definitions of organic goods and what not to feed (and why) just to name a few topics. The recipes are divided up into feeding stage appropriate sections with both fruits and veggies listed as pediatricians often differ on which one should be started first. The recipes themselves are super easy and while my daughter is trying to figure out whether or not she likes certain things, I find the taste of some of the foods to be pretty pleasant. As far as cost savings. I prepared an apple puree the other day with 3 lbs of organic red delicious apples ($3) and ended up with probably $20 (if I had to purchase) in food and it took very little time!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2008Lisa Barnes is a genious and a source of comfort to all nervous new mommies who want to give their children the best nutrition possible. Every recipe is easy, nutritious and delicious- best of all. My 10 month old has eaten fresh purees and other recipes from her book since 6 months old. He is what I call, a "baby food snob," in that he will not even look at processed jarred baby foods. She follows food safety recommendations and guidelines that are the same as the American Academy of Pediatrics (there is no quote or mention of them in her book, it is just the same advice). I bought many other baby foods books and this by far is the best and offers the most solid advice and guidelines for a healthy diet for baby. Lisa offers stage-by-stage advice for what to cook next and what to expect, which is priceless. I recommend this book to everyone!!!!

Very obvious 'recipes'. Tables were not formatted for iPad. Very disappointing, particularly as this was a relatively expensive ebook. Wouldn't recommend.

It was okay, didn't really need it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, will probably return it
I find it's a waste, the first 40 pages is more instructive, including learning..etc. Not really what I was looking for, I would take more recipes instead. I don't need a recipe book for tips on parenting.
