- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2025What I expected was a simple cookbook for baby purees. What I got was extremely informative. Covers everything from when to start purees to food allergy safety. I did see some concerns about the butter content however if you do a little research you will find it's actually a good thing to include in your babies diet, however if you feel it's too much, just limit it in your recipes.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2011I keep seeing people warning against some of the ingredients included in recipes in this book. It is true that as mothers we must use caution when it comes to what our children consume. But keep an open mind ladies (and gentleman) The AAP has set guidelines that we have considered the standard for many years HOWEVER, those guidelines have recently begun to be revised... fish, eggs, citrus and dairy were considered no no's for children under the age of one in previous years, however, if you child has no history of food allergies, and you have no family history of specific allergies (IE citrus, or eggs) then the introduction plan of 1 new food, for 3 -4 days watching for signs of allergic reaction is completely safe. One of the reason the AAP recommends holding off on fish although EXCELLENT for developing baby's eye, brain etc. because of the high concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids... is because conventional store bought/farm raised fish can have toxic levels of mercury and other chemicals in them. If you're going to introduce fish to baby, ALWAYS use wild-caught/organic white fish. There is also MUCH research coming about indicating that introducing these foods at an earlier age then 1 year DOES NOT prevent a food allergy. Generally if they are going to have one, it's there after the age of 9 months when babies begin to completely rely on their own immune systems and not the antibodies in mothers milk. I'm not saying this to combat others comments, just to bring peace of mind that if you feel as though your child is healthy, and has no health complications (such as known family history) or indicators of food sensitivity's (such as eczema which can indicate a milk protein, soy, or gluten allergy) reflux (you'd want to stay away from the citrus, tomatoes and high acid content foods)etc... GO FOR IT! On the subject of cows milk, which seems to be one of the things I keep seeing mentioned... there is a difference between a glass of milk and CULTURED whole milk products, such as yogurt which she often recommends using... it IS absolutely AMAZING for babies 6 months and older and PERFECTLY SAFE! In cultured milk products the lactose is broken down differently b/c of the fermenting process so it doesn't have the same affect on someone with a general dairy allergy. However, if you have a severe milk PROTEIN allergy, or family history of such, you may want to wait. For Example Stonyfiels farms organic yo'baby yogurt is for babies 6 months of age... so happy yogurting b/c it's SO great for baby... lot's of healthy probiotics,& omega 3 fatty acids...
Check out this link on the AAP website HealthyChildren.org where they actually now RECOMMEND many of these foods as part of a healthy diet for children age 6 MONTHS and over. [...]
I copied and pasted this directly from the AAP website
Many pediatricians recommend against giving eggs and fish in the first year of life because of allergic reactions, but there is no evidence that introducing these nutrient-dense foods after 4 to 6 months of age determines whether your baby will be allergic to them. Give your baby one new food at a time, and wait at least 2 to 3 days before starting another. After each new food, watch for any allergic reactions such as diarrhea, rash, or vomiting. If any of these occur, stop using the new food and consult with your child's doctor.
Within a few months of starting solid foods, your baby's daily diet should include a variety of foods each day that may include the following:
* Breast milk and/or formula
* Meats
* Cereal
* Vegetables
* Fruits
* Eggs and fish
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2011I really like this book. I was looking for recipes that were delicious and nutrious. I have five children and have always thought that if I would not eat something out of the baby food jar I surely was not going to give it to my child to eat. I wanted fresh foods that tasted good. I am not a food snob at all but would you want to eat the vegetables and meats that are offered in a jar or pouch by the baby food companies? They are not very appetizing (except for baby jar fruits - yum!!), so I decided to skip them and make my own instead. I have made several of her recipes and they have all been delicious. I also like the fact that you can freeze them. I make batches of her recipes and then I freeze them into cubes using OXO Tot Baby Food Freezer Tray, White/Green. I freeze the cubes and place it in a freezer bag and then mark the date and the ingredients. In a household with five kids, this has been a lifesaver. This has made it easier for my older kids and my husband to feed the baby without a lot of guess work as the food is always ready to warm up. I will agree with other reviewers in that there are a lot of recipes that call for butter, cinnamon and cheese sauce but I don't mind getting my daughter's palate used to these flavors now. To each his own, I guess. Also, some other reviewers mentioned tomaotes and citrus in the recipes. I think you have to use your own judgement here and watch your baby. I used one of the recipes that called for tomato and it was simply too acidic for my daughter and she developed a diaper rash right away. I eliminated that particular puree and smeared her bottom with some Desitin Maximum Strength Paste, 4-Ounce(Pack of 2)and it was over. I will not try to feed her that again until she is a little bit older. I really do like and recommend the book - it is great even if you just want to get some baby food recipe ideas. I have made many substitutions and the recipes have turned out great. I am happy to have this book in my arsenal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin & more!
I was so excited about weaning my daughter & bought a few books on the matter. Annabel Karmels books are fabulous. Both informative & inspiring. I really enjoyed weaning & luckily i didn't go back to work so had more time on my hands to make all my daughters meals from scratch in those important early days. I am not against jars & they are very useful when time is tight or you're on the go but they can be a little bland & you know exactly what goes into your own creations. You also save quite a bit of money.
This book covers everything from first tastes to more lumpy food for when your tot is a little older. Its important not to give your baby pureed food for too long as they may refuse to eat food with lumps in. It also helps with their development to move on swiftly.
It even made me try foods that i hadn't had before but found that i loved such as butternut squash & sweet potatos.
There is plenty of helpful advice about when to introduce various foods & info about allergies & food intolerances. The books is divided up into age sections.
Don't wean without an Annabel Karmel book either this or the Baby & Toddler Meal Planner.
I can't wait to use this again in a few months time with my new son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for mothers and babies
Beautiful book with lots of helpful tips and healthy ideas. Simply and clearly written without adding repetitive or useless information. Baby even loves looking at all the pictures and colors! Many recipes are common sense (fruit + water) but I still enjoy having this book in my kitchen.
